What you'll do...
Role summary:Join Walmart as a Staff Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and deployment of scalable platform capabilities, including infrastructure, tooling, and AI/ML frameworks. This role drives the full software lifecycle, ensuring alignment with architectural standards and business objectives. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, mentor engineering teams, and collaborate across functions to deliver innovative, data-driven solutions. About the team:
The Marketplace Engineering team develops and maintains core platforms supporting Walmart’s extensive product range and competitive pricing. This team manages the seller lifecycle, monitors customer interactions, and delivers risk features to detect and mitigate marketplace risks. Collaborating with partner platform teams, they ensure seamless integration and continuous improvement of seller and customer experiences on walmart.com. Utilizing cloud-native architecture, software design patterns, and data-driven decision-making, the team builds scalable, resilient solutions that drive operational excellence and innovation across the marketplace ecosystem.
What you'll do:
- Design and build highly scalable backend microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
- Architect and implement real-time event-driven systems using Apache Kafka.
- Develop and optimize large-scale batch and streaming data pipelines using Apache Spark.
- Drive architecture decisions around scalability, resiliency, observability, and cost efficiency.
- Lead system design reviews and define engineering best practices for distributed systems.
- Work closely with Product, Data Science, Platform, and Infrastructure teams to deliver business impact.
- Optimize system performance through partitioning strategies, caching, async processing, and concurrency tuning.
- Mentor engineers and act as a technical multiplier across multiple teams.
- Participate in production incident reviews and drive long-term platform reliability improvements.
What you'll bring:
- Proven expertise in cloud-native architecture, including microservices, containers, and automation to ensure scalable and resilient systems.
- Strong experience in software development lifecycle management, encompassing coding, testing, CI/CD deployment, and maintenance.
- Proficiency in platform engineering, infrastructure tooling, and AI/ML integration using languages such as JavaScript, Python, Java, and C++.
- Ability to conduct system design reviews and apply software design patterns for secure, maintainable, and modular solutions.
- Demonstrated leadership in mentoring engineers and influencing architectural decisions to promote technical excellence.
- Skilled in data-driven decision making, debugging, and continuous development to optimize engineering outcomes.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
