Senior Backend Engineer (TypeScript / Python / Kubernetes)

from đŸ‡«đŸ‡ź Finland

Greenstep is a growing, global group helping thousands of companies in Europe to grow through clarity. We are a technology-oriented company with Finnish roots, founded in 2010. In addition to Finland, we currently operate in Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Our team of around 800 experts consists of seasoned professionals in areas such as accounting, CFO services, financial management, HR, analytics, ERP and CRM technologies, payroll, as well as tax and legal services. We are an agile growth company, and our service offering continuously expands in line with our customers’ evolving needs.

We are now looking for anexperienced Backend Engineer to help us build scalable backend platforms and distributed systems!

The Role

As a Backend Engineer with a focus on scalable backend platforms and distributed systems, you'llwork on a cloud-native platform built on Kubernetes, developing multiple backend services in TypeScript (Node.js) and Python, integrating authentication, writing automated tests, and deploying with modern Kubernetes tooling. You'll collaborate with platform and product teams to build secure, observable, and production-ready systems, and own features from design through deployment and operations. Domain experience in accounting, payroll, or ERP is a significant advantage, since much of what we build models for real financial and business workflows.

You will:

  • Design and develop scalable backend services and REST/event-driven APIs in TypeScript (Node.js) and Python.

  • Design software that behaves reliably in distributed systems (scalability, high availability, fault tolerance, idempotency, retries, caching).

  • Implement secure authentication and authorization (OAuth2, OIDC, JWT, RBAC) and secure API design.

  • Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, and take part in code reviews.

  • Containerize applications with Docker and deploy/maintain services on Kubernetes using Helm.

  • Work with CI/CD pipelines to automate builds, testing, and deployments.

  • Debug production issues across distributed services and improve performance, reliability, and observability.

You enjoy working closely withfrontend, DevOps, and product teams to shape solutions from idea to implementation. You're comfortable contributing toarchitecture and design discussions, and you take pride in helping less experienced engineers grow.

What we're looking for

You bring at leastfive years of backend engineering experience and enjoy solving complex technical challenges. You have strongproblem-solving and debugging skills, can reason aboutdistributed systems, and are comfortableworking independently while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams. Youtake ownership of your work, care about writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code, andcommunicate clearly with others. You're also happy toshare your knowledge and support the growth of less experienced colleagues through mentoring and guidance.

Required skills:

  • Strong experience withTypeScript (Node.js) and/orPython, including asynchronous programming.

  • DesigningREST APIs and microservice architectures.

  • Relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred); message queues / event-driven architectures a plus.

  • Distributed systems: service-to-service communication, scalability, fault tolerance, retries, circuit breakers, caching, API versioning, observability.

  • Kubernetes and cloud-native: Docker, Helm, networking, ConfigMaps/Secrets, Ingress, rolling deployments, health probes, resource management, production deployments.

  • Security: OAuth2, OIDC, JWT, RBAC, secure API design, secrets management.

  • Quality: unit/integration/API testing, test automation, mocking, static analysis.

  • DevOps: Git, CI/CD (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar), Infrastructure as Code, release management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Accounting, ERP, payroll, or financial software domain experience - a strong advantage and a real factor in our hiring decision.

  • API gateways/service mesh (Traefik, Kong, NGINX, Istio, Linkerd), message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ, NATS).

  • Observability (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, distributed tracing), multi-clusterKubernetes, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).

  • Experience withAI-enabled or agent-based backend systems.
