Description:
 
Project Overview
 
  • The objective of this program is to reduce commercial, operational, and security risk within the F5 environment through infrastructure consolidation, software modernization, vulnerability remediation, and retirement of legacy hardware platforms.
  • This individual will serve as the organization's primary F5 Subject Matter Expert (SME), working alongside a Managed Service Provider (MSP) and partnering with the broader Network Security Engineering team.
 
Position Summary
 
  • We are seeking a highly experienced, self-directed F5 Engineer who thrives in an autonomous environment. The ideal candidate will proactively identify risks, opportunities, and required actions rather than waiting for direction. Success in this role will be driven as much by strong communication, ownership, and initiative as by technical expertise.
  • This resource will function as the highest level of F5 escalation support, handling complex engineering efforts, critical incidents, platform modernization initiatives, and strategic roadmap planning.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
F5 Subject Matter Expert
 
  • Serve as the lead F5 SME within the organization.
  • Provide expert-level support for complex F5 infrastructure and application delivery services.
  • Act as the final escalation point for F5-related issues that cannot be resolved by the MSP or Network Operations teams.
  • Support troubleshooting of critical Priority 1 and Priority 2 incidents related to F5 technologies.
 
Infrastructure Modernization & Engineering
 
  • Lead efforts to modernize and optimize the enterprise F5 environment.
  • Ensure F5 platforms remain current, supported, secure, and aligned with vendor best practices.
  • Drive software upgrades, platform migrations, and lifecycle management initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and operational efficiencies.
 
Strategic Planning
 
  • Proactively assess environment risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Develop and manage engineering backlogs and project roadmaps.
  • Partner with architects, security teams, and operational teams to prioritize initiatives and drive execution.
 
Documentation
 
  • Create and maintain comprehensive F5 design documentation.
  • Develop architecture diagrams and technical drawings using:
  • Microsoft Word
  • draw.io

  • F5 architecture and design documentation.
  • Current-state and future-state infrastructure diagrams.
  • Technical implementation and migration documentation.
 
Technical Deliverables
 
  • Retire approximately 90% of non-VIPRION F5 platforms through migration to virtualized environments.
  • Retire 100% of VIPRION platforms through migration to virtualized F5 solutions.
  • Upgrade F5 BIG-IP environments to current supported versions per F5 recommendations.
  • Mitigate critical security vulnerabilities through migrations, upgrades, and modernization activities.
  • Reduce operational and security risks across the F5 infrastructure landscape.
 
Required Technical Skills
 
Must-Have Expertise
 
  • 8-10+ years of networking and infrastructure engineering experience.
  • Expert-level experience with:
  • F5 BIG-IP
  • Local Traffic Manager (LTM)
  • DNS
  • Application Security Manager (ASM)
  • Experience designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise-scale F5 environments.
  • Experience performing F5 upgrades, migrations, and platform lifecycle management.
  • Strong understanding of network architecture, load balancing, application delivery, and security concepts.
 
Preferred Skills
 
  • F5 Distributed Cloud experience.
  • Experience with Ansible automation.
  • Infrastructure automation and scripting experience.
  • Experience migrating legacy F5 hardware to virtualized platforms.

Team Environment
 
  • Serve as the sole F5 SME supporting the environment.
  • Work closely with a Managed Service Provider (MSP).
  • Partner with a broader Network Security Engineering organization of approximately 20 team members.
  • Network Operations team handles day-to-day support tickets; this role focuses on engineering, escalations, modernization, and strategic initiatives.
 
Compensation: ‘
 
The hourly rate for this position is between $XX-XX per hour.
