Electric Meter Technician - Level 1

Position Overview

As an Electric Meter Technician, you will play an important role in ensuring electric meters and related equipment operate accurately, safely, and reliably. You will perform testing, maintenance, and support activities both in the meter shop and in the field while learning the skills needed for advancement within the metering organization.

This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, local 2304. The starting wage for an Electric Meter Technician Level 1 is $44.04/hour.

What You'll Do

In this role, you will:

• Test, clean, and repair single-phase electric meters and related electronic equipment
• Test current and potential transformers
• Prepare transformers and metering equipment for field installation
• Perform meter inventories and maintain accurate records
• Read electric meters and document meter readings
• Operate meter testing equipment and diagnostic tools
• Use hand tools and electrical testing instruments, including voltmeters and ammeters
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
• Perform routine driver inspections and maintenance on company vehicles
• Operate company vehicles as required
• Perform other related duties that support metering operations

Growth and Advancement

After six months in the Level 1A position, employees may be eligible to advance to Level 1B. Progression is based on successfully demonstrating the required skills and knowledge through a skills evaluation and receiving approval from the Electric Meter Shop Working Crew Leader and Supervisor or Manager.

Upon advancing to Level 1B, employees are qualified to independently perform single-phase self-contained electric meter exchanges and removals in the field.

Qualifications

To be successful in this position, candidates should have:

• An Associate's Degree in Electronics, Electrical Technology, or equivalent education that provides a solid understanding of electrical theory
• Computer skills and experience using word processing, spreadsheet, and other business software applications
• The aptitude and ability to learn technical metering processes and procedures
• Strong customer service and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with customers and coworkers
• A valid Wisconsin driver's license that can be maintained throughout employment
• Willingness to work overtime when required

Physical Requirements

This position involves a combination of shop and field work and requires the ability to:

• Perform continuous light physical work with occasional heavy lifting
• Lift and carry up to 75 pounds
• Use both hands and legs effectively to perform job duties
• Bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, push, pull, and reach overhead
• Work safely indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Maintain clear vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish colors and shades used in electrical work
• Communicate effectively through speaking and hearing
