Natural Resources Technician - Early Career Development Program- Fort AP Hill, VA

Job Description

Position Summary:

One Natural Resources Technician (Seasonal Worker, Full-time, 40 hours/week) position is available with the Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position will provide entry-level training and experience on a range of natural resources projects supporting the Natural Resources Management (NRM) program atFort AP Hill, VA.

The technician will provide support to the Fort A.P. Hill Natural Resources Program under through completion of fish and wildlife surveys and forest management projects. This position is not-to-exceed260 working days.

Potential work activities may include but are not limited to the tasks below:

• Assisting in food plot management and planting, fertilization by utilizing agricultural tractors, chainsaws, planting implements, and/or off road vehicles (4x4).
• Assisting with fish stocking, prescribed burning, soil sampling, and trail maintenance/clearing, conducting non-game and game wildlife surveys by researching and designing new surveys and improve existing surveys methods; Assisting with prescribed burning activities and wildland fire response; helping with organized events by assisting with preparation, logistics, set up, and cleanup.
• Assisting with a variety of surveys including fish and wildlife populations, threatened and endangered species, and habitat surveys; gathering biological metrics including weight, age and length of harvested animals; providing support to other elements at Fort A.P. Hill including, but not limited to, invasive species control, endangered species support, and forestry support.
• Revising and creating tables and graphs for reports and management plans; utilizing GIS to create and convert data collected in surveys and observations to create maps that will enable more accurate and precise survey and records.
• Representing the Fish & Wildlife Branch at community meetings (either independently or collaboratively with other Fort A.P. Hill elements), working at the Game Check Station, and providing technical support for hunters, trappers, and anglers using the iSportsman platform.

This position is onsite, and the technician must have reliable transportation to the site. The ECDP is unable to provide relocation or housing stipends.

Fort A.P. Hill encompasses 76,000 acres in Caroline County, Virginia and, in compliance with Army Regulation 200-1, Environmental Protection and Enhancement and the installation INRMP, Fort A.P. Hill manages its wildlife resources to provide and maintain exceptional wildlife health and ecosystems and to provide recreational opportunities with hunting, trapping and fishing.

Conditions of Employment:

• Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires). 
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
• Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass. You will need to possess a Real ID or passport.
• Must be able to work long hours independently in remote, rugged field conditions under harsh weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:       

• Pursuing a B.S. in a natural resources-, cultural resources-, ecosystem science-, or environmental compliance-related field (at least a sophomore standing).
• At least 3 months and no more than 3 years of relevant experience, which may include internships, fieldwork, seasonal jobs, volunteer work, or applied coursework.
• Basic field data collection skills (eg. Vegetation surveys, wildlife monitoring, GPS-based mapping; academic or field school experience would count).
• Experience performing wildlife demographic and monitoring.
• Experience performing vegetation surveys, including rare plant monitoring.
• Experience performing timber inventories.
• Experience with word processing, database entry, and data retrieval.
• Experience working on a military installation.

Preferred Qualifications:        

• Pursing or have a degree specifically in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
• Experience with heavy equipment, such as, tractors and other heavy farming equipment.
• GPS operating experience.
• Preference will be given to 1) those who have prior experience working at Fort A.P. Hill and 2) those that already reside in Virginia.
