Job Summary
Join our Operations team as a Field & Service Technician supporting the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas service to residential and commercial customers. Technicians may perform field construction and maintenance activities or customer service and gas service work, depending on business needs and operational assignment. This entry-level role provides hands-on training, career progression opportunities, and the ability to develop technical skills through required qualifications and training programs.
Essential Functions
Field Technician
- Install, repair, and replace natural gas distribution facilities, including mains and services.
- Operate and maintain construction equipment such as backhoes, side booms, tampers, and cranes.
- Transport equipment and materials to job sites.
- Perform routine maintenance on tools and equipment.
- Support construction, maintenance, and emergency response activities.
Service Technician
- Install and remove gas meters, regulators, and meter settings.
- Investigate gas service issues, leaks, odors, outages, and other customer concerns.
- Turn gas service on and off for customers.
- Test service and house lines for leaks using specialized equipment.
- Service and adjust gas appliances.
- Provide guidance to customers, contractors, and plumbers regarding gas service installations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to use hand tools and apply mechanical principles.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to understand written and verbal instructions.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and safely.
- Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
- Ability to obtain or maintain required company certifications and Operator Qualifications (OQs).
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to respond to emergency calls and work scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
- Ability to pass pre-employment assessments, physical capability testing, drug screening, motor vehicle record review, and background screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the plumbing trade, particularly with natural gas systems.
- Experience reading and interpreting gauges and dials.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one, where required.
As a public utility, NiSource provides essential services to customers 24/7. Emergency needs can arise at various times throughout the year, including during storm season. Employees may be required to support emergency response efforts, which could include working outside normal hours or assisting with tasks outside of typical responsibilities.

Salary Range*:
$34.62 - $38.01*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to thecandidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
