Job Description

The Building Patrol Officer (BPO) is a licensed in‑house security agent responsible for helping maintain a safe and secure campus environment. BPOs deter criminal activity through visible patrols and serve as frontline customer‑service representatives for NAIT and Protective Services. They provide education and awareness on NAIT policies, build rapport with staff, students, and visitors, and work closely with NAIT Peace Officers and external law enforcement when security issues require coordinated response or investigative support.

BPOs work in uniform as part of a team and must follow a structured shift schedule that includes extended hours, day and night shifts, weekends, and statutory holidays.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe environment and protect NAIT property and assets.
• Conduct routine interior and exterior patrols of campus buildings and grounds.
• Proactively deter criminal activity and undesirable behavior through high‑visibility presence.
• Respond to suspicious activity and security‑related service calls.
• Provide first aid and evacuation assistance during emergencies.
• Present a professional, customer‑focused image while interacting with staff, students, and visitors.
• Provide education and awareness on NAIT policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Monitor and control access to facilities and secure designated areas.
• Support NAIT Peace Officers, Security Communications Officers, and partner agencies.
• Prepare detailed reports and document security‑related activities.

Skills & Abilities

• Ability to maintain a clear Police Information Check with no convictions, outstanding charges, or ongoing investigations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with privacy requirements.
• Professional appearance and conduct.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
• Strong judgment, common sense, and tact when addressing challenging situations.
• Ability to assess situations and respond appropriately in dynamic environments.
• Knowledge of relevant laws, bylaws, legislation, and crime‑prevention principles.
• Understanding of Criminal Code authorities, including powers of arrest.
• Knowledge and use of security technology such as access control systems, CCTV, monitoring systems, and fire safety systems.
• Ability to use current computer software platforms and databases.
• Ability to meet medical and vision standards required for the role.

Qualifications

• Eligible to work in Canada (citizen or legally authorized).
• High School Diploma.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License (non‑GDL) with no history of suspensions.
• Valid Alberta Security Services License.
• Valid P.A.R.E. (Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation) certification.
• Standard First Aid/CPR with AED certification.
• Successful completion of the Alberta Basic Security Guard Training Course (ABST).
• Completion of a post‑secondary program in law enforcement, security, or criminology (asset).
• Minimum one year of enforcement or security‑related experience.
• Minimum three years of strong customer service experience, including conflict‑resolution skills.
• Successful completion of defensive tactics training.
• Successful completion of baton training.

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).

Classification – Building Patrol Officer - 40

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
