Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced CA Datacom/DB Database Administrator (DBA) to provide specialist database expertise within a complex, business-critical enterprise mainframe environment. This role requires a deep understanding of CA Datacom/DB, including its architecture, internals, database structures, administration and interaction with applications operating within an IBM z/OS environment. The position is primarily focused on providing specialist technical capability, risk mitigation and contingency support. The successful candidate will operate as a trusted subject matter expert who can be called upon to troubleshoot complex issues, support database migration activities and provide technical guidance when specialist Datacom expertise is required. This is particularly suited to an experienced mainframe database professional who is comfortable working independently and providing high-level technical expertise across a large-scale legacy environment.
Key Responsibilities:
The CA Datacom/DB DBA will be responsible for:
• Providing specialist CA Datacom/DB database administration, maintenance and technical support.
• Supporting Datacom databases operating within IBM z/OS mainframe environments.
• Providing subject matter expertise across Datacom/DB architecture, internals and database structures.
• Supporting and assisting with mainframe database migration activities.
• Diagnosing and resolving complex database, application and system issues.
• Performing database performance analysis, troubleshooting, tuning and optimisation.
• Investigating issues involving PL/I applications and their interaction with CA Datacom/DB.
• Providing technical guidance and recommendations when critical or complex issues arise.
• Supporting the ongoing stability, availability and resilience of the mainframe database environment.
• Identifying potential database risks and recommending appropriate mitigation strategies.
• Working collaboratively with application, infrastructure and mainframe technical teams.
• Providing specialist Datacom knowledge as a contingency resource when additional expertise is required.
• Responding quickly and effectively when critical Datacom-related issues require specialist intervention.
• Contributing to knowledge sharing and technical documentation where required.
Essential Skills & Experience
To be successful in this position, candidates will require strong commercial experience in:
• CA Datacom/DB administration, including extensive hands-on DBA experience.
• CA Datacom/DB architecture, internals and database structures.
• Supporting Datacom/DB within IBM z/OS mainframe environments.
• Mainframe database administration and support within complex enterprise environments.
• Database migration activities within mainframe environments.
• Datacom database troubleshooting, diagnostics and problem resolution.
• Performance analysis, tuning and optimization.
• PL/I, particularly the interaction between PL/I applications and Datacom/DB databases.
• Supporting large-scale, business-critical legacy systems.
• Diagnosing complex issues spanning databases, applications and the underlying mainframe environment.
Highly Desirable:
Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
• Banking or financial services environments.
• Large enterprise mainframe environments.
• Business-critical systems requiring high levels of availability and resilience.
• Legacy system modernization or migration programs.
• Providing specialist or escalation-level support for critical production environments.
• Working remotely with geographically dispersed technical teams.
About You
• You will be a highly experienced mainframe database specialist with deep technical expertise in CA Datacom/DB.
• You will be comfortable operating as a trusted technical SME and escalation resource, rather than solely performing traditional day-to-day DBA activities.
• You will have the ability to quickly understand complex legacy environments, identify the root cause of technical issues and provide practical recommendations to minimize operational risk.
