Organization/Team Mission

Mercari R4D is a research and development organization established to create future innovations toward a society where we can circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people—which is the goal of Mercari Group—under the mission of "pioneering the path to unknown value." At R4D, we have emphasized a "Co-innovation" approach to pioneer new value. Co-innovation is an R&D framework that transcends community boundaries—such as industry, academia, and government—to collaborate and jointly aim to solve social issues and realize a better society. Since its establishment, R4D has consistently aimed to act as a hub connecting all communities.

To become a world-leading hub for such Co-innovation, R4D hopes to create a place where anyone can experience the possibilities of future innovation through Mercari's research.

Currently, based on the core concept of "changing the way value is exchanged through the power of technology," we are conducting research and development in a wide range of fields, including AI, blockchain, HCI (Human-Computer Interaction), quantum computing, mobility, communication, and ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues), aiming to create future innovations for Mercari Group's services and businesses.

We are currently seeking a Researcher in the ELSI field. The ELSI Researcher will closely collaborate with various teams within Mercari Group as well as external research institutions such as universities, explore the ELSI associated with the social implementation of advanced technologies, and lead projects aimed at creating innovation and realizing a better society.

Work Responsibilities

• Analyze the social impact of the following advanced technologies being researched and developed by R4D and other internal departments, and incorporate findings into research plans:

• AI
• Robotics
• RWA (Real World Asset)
• AR/VR
• Quantum computing

• Construct risk assessment frameworks and conduct specific assessments with an eye toward implementing advanced technologies into Mercari's products and real-world society.
• Collaborate with R4D and product teams to formulate and operate guidelines and provide advice for ethical considerations from the early stages of development.
• Build and operate systems to continuously update existing guidelines in response to technological advancements and social changes.
• Proactively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and take ownership of project management.
• Monitor domestic and international regulations and standards (such as the EU AI Act) and analyze/propose their impact on our business.
• Summarize acquired knowledge to present at domestic and international conferences and submit papers to journals.

Unique Challenges

• You can drive ELSI research while engaging in daily discussions with researchers and engineers across fields such as AI, HCI, and quantum computing. It is an environment where you can co-design how to implement advanced technologies into society from the initial stages of research and development.
• Collaborate with researchers from universities, enabling us as a private company to carry out long-term research projects that are not bound by conventional frameworks.
• As an independent research organization within the company, you can also gain technical input from products used by about 24 million monthly active users, such as the marketplace app "Mercari" and the payment service "Merpay."

Qualifications

• Required Experience/Skills
• • Master's degree or higher in humanities and social sciences fields such as ethics, philosophy, or sociology.
  • Track record of conducting interdisciplinary research beyond your own area of expertise.
  • Experience participating in and driving projects involving multiple experts and practitioners.
  • Ability to analyze and verbalize the social impact of technology from multiple perspectives.
  • Ability to translate knowledge from the humanities and social sciences into practical knowledge and systems that can be utilized within the organization.
• Preferred Experience/Skills
• • Ph.D. holder or candidate in humanities and social sciences fields.
  • Research experience in ELSI related to advanced technologies such as AI and robotics.
  • Practical experience in technology assessment (evaluating the social impact of technology).
  • Experience working on ELSI-related projects at tech companies, think tanks, or public research institutions.
  • Project management experience in a team with diverse areas of expertise.

業務内容

• R4Dや社内の他部署が進める、以下のような先端技術の研究開発について、技術が社会に与えるインパクトを分析し、研究計画等へ落とし込む
• • AI
  • ロボット
  • RWA（Real World Asset）
  • AR/VR
  • 量子コンピュータ
• 先端技術をメルカリのプロダクトや実社会へ実装することを見据えた、リスクアセスメントの枠組みの構築や、具体的なアセスメントの実施を行う
• R4Dやプロダクトチームと連携し、開発の初期段階から倫理的配慮を組み込むためのアドバイスやガイドラインを策定・運用する
• 技術の進展や社会変化に合わせて、既存のガイドラインを継続的にアップデートする仕組みを構築・運用する
• 社内外の関係者と自ら連携し、オーナーシップを持ってプロジェクトマネジメントを行う
• 国内外の法規制・規範（EU AI Act等）のモニタリングと、自社事業への影響を分析・提言する
• 得られた知見をまとめ、国内外の学会での発表や論文投稿を行う
