Summary
** This is an in-office position located in Fredericksburg, VA **
As a Commercial Underwriter, you’ll play an important role in supporting our Commercial Auto and Trucking business. In this position, you’ll review risks, make underwriting decisions, process key compliance transactions, and help support profitable growth and customer retention across all states.
This role involves regular follow-up with new and renewing business, including outbound AND inbound calls to gather information, explain decisions, and help resolve complex underwriting matters. The ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to explain detailed information clearly and professionally.
We’re looking for someone who is organized, efficient, adaptable, and comfortable working in an environment where guidelines and procedures may change.

RESPONSIBILITES:
- Determines the company’s risk exposure and accepts or rejects new business applications.
- Continues or terminates policies for renewals, reissues, changes, or after claims with assistance from software applications.
- Ensures appropriate underwriting and rating of individual policies based on risk evaluation.
- Handles reconsideration decisions based on Lines of Authority guidelines including ability to override a decision made by a lower graded underwriter or sales/service counselor.
- Processes new or re-issued policies, renewals and policy changes following a favorable underwriting review.
- Processes letters for rejection or termination, following an adverse underwriting decision.
- Provides information and/or makes recommendations by telephone about GEICO products, coverages, services, and policies.
- Retains customers after adverse action that result in a company move down and premium difference.

Requirements:
- 1 year of commercial trucking underwriting experience
- Ability to provide high-quality customer service
- Ability to actively listen to customers’ needs/concerns
- Ability to multitask (listen and type; speak and navigate the system)
- Must meet corporate attendance standards
- Must maintain the required licenses issued by state insurance departments
