Advocate Health’s Legal Department is seeking a junior Labor & Employment (L&E) attorney to provide legal advice and representation to our non-profit healthcare system.  Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines, comfort interacting with senior executives, and intimate familiarity with state and federal employment laws.  This position is remote.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal support to enterprise entities.   
  • Work collaboratively with attorneys, business partners, other teammates, outside counsel, and outside vendors, performing a wide variety of duties.   
  • Communicate effectively with Legal Department teammates, business partners, courts, and government agencies. 
  • Manage and delegate projects to outside counsel, with an ability to identify and articulate to outside counsel what needs to be done on matters such as EEOC charges, lawsuits, government agency investigations, and general employment matters and questions.
  • Manage legal matters, including complex litigation, transactions, litigation holds, investigations, due diligence, discovery, and other responsibilities and assignments as required in the Legal Department.  
  • Conduct legal research. 
  • In partnership with outside counsel, conduct witness interviews, prepares witnesses for depositions, government agency interviews, and trial. 
  • Attend and/or provide support in mediations and depositions.   
  • In partnership with outside counsel and/or more senior in-house attorneys, negotiate various types of legal documents such as contracts, employment agreements, settlement agreements, severance agreements, discovery responses, pleadings, position statements, response to requests for information, response to agency complaints, correspondence, memoranda, policies and other legal documents 
  • Participate in knowledge sharing, training, mentoring, and development for self and other members of the Legal Department. 

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Attorney must be licensed and registered as required by applicable law. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience counseling multi-state employers
  • Ability to advise on complex employment matters and effectively interact with senior executives
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with analytical and critical thinking abilities; proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

Education Required:

  • ​​ Doctorate Degree in Law from an accredited law school.

Experience Required:

  • ​​ Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of experience providing legal services within a law firm or as in-house legal counsel.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Ability to support Legal Department leadership and business clients on business and legal strategy, while assessing, communicating, managing, and mitigating legal risk to the enterprise.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with federal and applicable state employment laws and related agencies highly recommended
  • Ability to develop, approve, and interpret policies within various sub-functions and departments.
  • Ability to effectively leverage the use of outside counsel while controlling outside counsel costs.
  • Ability to work effectively with governmental and other regulatory agencies to protect the best interests of the enterprise.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees, which is necessary to collaborate with staff, management, executives and other organizations.
  • Excellent leadership and motivational skills.
  • Adaptable to change, supports transformation, and helps drive strategic objectives.

  • Excellent research and investigation skills.  
  • Knowledge and appreciation for the subtleties in applicable laws and regulations. Ability to spot legal, regulatory and risk management issues. 
  • Well organized, ability to identify, track and manage legal and other deadlines.  
  • Project management and leadership skills. 
  • Proficient in business English, legal terminology, and research.   
  • Knowledge of court and government agency systems and procedures.   
  • Experience in the health care industry preferred.   

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This position requires travel, therefore, will be exposed to weather and road conditions.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Exposed to a normal office environment.
