Fairness feels good

Make a real impact at AFCA. Where fairness drives every decision. Help us deliver world-class, independent complaints resolution for Australians. As a not-for-profit and progressive financial ombudsman, we’re championing positive change. Achieving our purpose takes progressive thinking, accountability and resilience. At AFCA, our inclusive leadership values every voice. We offer our people flexible work options, thoughtful benefits and opportunities to deepen expertise. Flourish in a diverse, caring culture. Feel the difference of belonging to an organisation intentionally designed to put people first.

AFCA is preparing for a significant new role under the Australian Government's world-first Scams Prevention Framework (SPF), which strengthens consumer protections against scams. As the single External Dispute Resolution (EDR) scheme for scam complaints across digital platforms, banking and telecommunications sectors, AFCA will play a central role in resolving disputes, supporting consumers and businesses, and providing insights to improve outcomes across the financial services system.

As we prepare for the SPF to commence on 31 March 2027, we're looking for talented people to join us in delivering this nationally significant initiative and making a meaningful difference for consumers.

As the Senior Risk & Compliance Consultant, you'll play a key role in helping AFCA build and operate a robust risk, compliance and assurance framework for a nationally significant scheme designed to improve outcomes for consumers impacted by scams. Working across a complex regulatory environment, you'll help ensure risks are identified, obligations are managed, controls are effective, and assurance activities drive continuous improvement.

About the Role

Reporting to the Strategic Lead, Scheme Integrity & Assurance, you'll support the implementation and ongoing operation of AFCA's Scams Prevention Framework dispute resolution arrangements through the delivery of risk, compliance and assurance activities.

This is initially a max-term contract until July 2027.

In this role, you will:

  • Support the development, implementation and ongoing enhancement of the risk and compliance arrangements for the Scams EDR program and scheme.
  • Coordinate risk and compliance activities across the program.
  • Maintain risk, compliance and assurance registers, controls, actions and supporting records.
  • Monitor obligations, controls, treatments and emerging risks.
  • Support assurance reviews, audits and control assessments.
  • Prepare high-quality governance, risk and compliance reporting for management and program forums.
  • Support the incorporation of risk, compliance, privacy, control and assurance requirements into the scheme’s processes, systems and operating models.
  • Provide strategic support across both implementation and BAU functions, including surge capacity for emerging priorities and regulatory obligations.
  • Partner with stakeholders across Legal, Privacy, Information Security, Technology and Operations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen governance and risk maturity across the program.

We're looking for an experienced risk and compliance professional who thrives in complex environments and enjoys bringing structure, insight and practical solutions to emerging challenges.

To be successful, you'll bring:

  • Experience in risk management, compliance, assurance or audit.
  • Experience supporting complex programs, transformation initiatives or regulatory implementations.
  • Strong knowledge of risk assessment, controls, compliance obligations, issue management and assurance processes.
  • Experience maintaining risk, compliance or assurance registers and tracking actions through to completion.
  • Proven ability to engage and influence a broad range of stakeholders, including senior leaders.
  • Strong analytical, reporting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to prepare executive-quality reports and briefing materials.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in risk, governance, compliance, law, business or a related discipline.
  • Gold AWEI Accreditation 2025 – Recognised for LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion.
  • Accredited Family Friendly Workplace – Supporting work-life balance and inclusivity.
  • Hybrid working – Flexible arrangements with two days a week in our modern offices designed for collaboration and wellbeing.
  • Additional and inclusive leave options – Flexible public holidays, gender affirmation leave, women’s health leave, and bonus paid time off over the end of year holiday period.

To apply

If you’re passionate about fairness and believe your skills align with this role, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every single criterion.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, cultures, abilities, sexual orientations, and gender identities. If you require any accessibility support during the recruitment process, please reach out to our team at Careers@afca.org.au.

We believe fairness starts with people. That’s why we don’t use AI or automated tools to screen candidates. As a result, our processes may take a little longer, and we thank you for your patience.
