•Winter - Spring (January – April/May): 8:30am-4:30pm; 35-39 hours per week
• Summer (May - August): Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm; 38 hours per week
•Fall (September – January): 8:30am – 4:30pm; 25-39 hours per week
Job Description:
The Adjunct Conservation Educator supports two internship programs:Project TRUE (Teens Researching Urban Ecology) and theEmerging Leaders in Climate Solutions Internship (ELCSI). This role provides coordination, instruction, mentorship, and program support for high school, undergraduate, and trade school participants, helping cultivate the next generation of conservation and environmental professionals.
Project TRUE (May–September)
Project TRUE is a 21-week urban ecology research program for rising high school juniors and seniors from the Bronx. The Adjunct Educator will assist with program implementation, collaborate with program leadership, and co-mentor high school and undergraduate participants. Responsibilities include facilitating research and mentorship curriculum, guiding students through research design, data collection and analysis, and supporting the presentation of research findings.
Emerging Leaders in Climate Solutions Internship (September–April)
ELCSI introduces undergraduate and trade school students from non-STEM backgrounds to climate science, conservation, and climate-related careers through hands-on learning and field experiences. As the primary program contact, the Adjunct Educator will coordinate daily operations, facilitate learning activities, organize field experiences, mentor interns, and support the completion of final projects and reports.
Responsibilities:
Serve as an educator, mentor, and facilitator for program participants.Develop, adapt, and deliver research, climate science, and mentorship curriculum.
Guide Project TRUE participants through research design, fieldwork, data analysis, and presentation of findings.
Coordinate ELCSI operations, communications, logistics, and participant engagement.
Organize fieldwork, field trips, and experiential learning opportunities.
Facilitate lessons and hands-on activities in classroom, zoo, outdoor, and field settings.
Support interns in developing culminating projects and reports.
Collaborate with staff, scientists, educators, mentors, and external partners.
Maintain program materials, supplies, and research equipment.
Monitor participant progress and provide academic and professional mentorship.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Internal Qualification Requirements
Minimum Qualifications• High School diploma or GED
• Ability to work within a highly team-oriented environment, as well as independently
• Excellent verbal communication skills to help interpret science concepts in classroom settings and at zoo exhibits
• Reliable, flexible and accountable
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 25lbs and spend long periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications
• Recent college graduate or current graduate student
• One year teaching experience at an informal science institution, including a camp program
• Educational background in ecology, environmental science or education preferred
• Bilingual/Spanish speaker is a plus
