TheRanked Choice Voting Resource Center (RCVRC) is a national election policy nonprofit that provides information, research, and tools to teach the public about ranked choice voting (RCV). We help make RCV elections successful. Governed by a Board of Directors, the Executive Director and staff handle the organization's day-to-day activities.

RCTab is the free, open source, federally tested RCV tabulation software developed by the Ranked Choice Voting Resource Center (RCVRC). RCTab uses cast vote records (CVRs) from all major voting system vendors to tabulate RCV election results. First used to tabulate elections in 2019, in 2023 RCTab was used to tabulate RCV winners in 9 jurisdictions, home to over 4.5 million total voters.

The RCTab Program Associate position is a new, entry-level position at RCVRC. This position will work closely with the RCTab Program Director to support current users, drive future development, and assist with certification efforts of RCTab in jurisdictions across the United States. RCTab development involves a broad array of tasks - conducting internal testing, researching and documenting app behavior, taking in user feedback, communicating with developers, etc. Successful candidates who can focus on a task and see it through to completion should apply. Successful candidates will be curious about ranked choice voting with a genuine interest in how RCTab works both technically and how it supports the mission and growth of RCVRC. Applicants with a non-traditional educational route are encouraged to apply if the quality and quantity of work experience lends itself to meeting all job requirements and skills.

Salary: $45K Annually

Key Responsibilities

Explores, investigates, and documents how RCTab works
Works with staff to thoroughly understand and document how RCTab works along with external partners to understand their needs and the scope of that work
Serves as the first point of contact for user-reported issues and needs
Researches and documents GitHub issues to address bugs and add new features
Works in concert with BrightSpots developers to ensure issues have all the necessary information for a successful implementation.
Builds a local dev environment to test updates and recreate user-reported issues
Edits existing and writes newRCTab documentation for maximum clarity and ease of use for our two main audiences: certification bodies & election administrators.

Job Requirements and Preferred Skills

Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in software development work; or equivalent combination of experience and education and experience
Basic understanding of Git and GitHub.
Basic understanding of software quality assurance (QA)
Applicants should have basic experience writing a thorough development task
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to complete and document base-level research
Exceptional organizational and time management skills with strong attention to detail
Maintains a positive and productive working relationship with staff, developers, contractors, and software users
Election administration experience is preferred, but not required
