We are Birdie, we are innovators that serve the social care space through our software products. In 2023 we enabled a remarkable 30 million care visits, we breached a new market and our product is now available in the UK and Germany, we also grew by adding 97 amazing new hires. This year we have joinedTechNation's FutureFifty 2024 cohort and we will position ourselves to make even more big jumps in scaling into the future.

“In the data and security team, we own the systems responsible for moving data from other systems into Birdie and out again. It's paramount that we prioritise reliability so our users have confidence that their data is secure, accurate and up to date. Our main goal right now is to ensure the services we own are reliable, easily monitored, and well maintained. We're currently focusing on the backend of our data migration pipeline to make it easier for us to follow the paper trail of data, to reduce the latency of the system, increase reliability, and to improve developer experience. To do this, we spent time refining our options, learning about how the current system works and finding where the pain points are, to come up with a brand new architecture. We're now working to build this new pipeline - you can often find us pairing or mobbing to ensure developers who are less experienced with the service have the opportunity to learn; not only does this service deal with quite complex logic, it's also built in Elixir, which is new to the majority of us on the team so we're moving slower than normal, but working together helps us learn faster.” -Emma

"In the Rostering team recently we’ve been exploring a new language to improve the performance of one of our backend service. We do so by mobbing to build the first features of the service while maintaining our existing service to make sure our current partners still have all the functionality we need. There is a big emphasis on code quality, so we build our tests alongside our code, making sure we use best practices and receive and give each other feedback on these regularly.

The last completed project was about improving and fastening the way our partners assign shifts to carers. We've done so by creating a new UI that allows bulk allocation of visits to carers and creating all the backend endpoints required to do so. We always have to make sure this works for both our UK and German clients which means collaborating across teams too. This got interrupted by a few high priorities bugs coming from our new partners in Germany. The German launched had a few hiccups, but overall went well and importantly meant we could gather feedback from a different market. Some days are dedicated to refining future projects alongside my tech lead and collaborating with the product manager and the designer to make sure our next features are ready to go. Beyond my immediate team, I engage in discussions with other teams to maintain consistency across systems and learning from our similar technical challenges.” -Alex

“We are currently working on a green-field project for the care workforce that has backend, frontend, and mobile-design system in a mono repo.

Whilst our stack follows many of the conventions used at Birdie, we have been able to experiment with a few key technologies (Tamagui, ts-rest, Drizzle ORM) to make our development easier. We use automation to solve problems once: TDD so that we can refactor easily as we create the domain together, and a fully automated pipeline, prioritising quick fixes to CI as we develop. We also draw from the many other codebases at Birdie for inspiration and solutions to problems.

My day to day in the Chickens team is spent spiking new technologies, refining work with my tech lead ready for the other engineers on the team, and pairing/mobbing to share knowledge and help and be helped.” - Anthony

🤩 What skills would help me be successful?

You will be working most often withReact &React Native and related tech (Redux, Redux-saga, offline-first...) ;NodeJS andTypescript.

Having knowledge ofRelational databases. For example, you will have to write and debug queries, understand their performance and figure out how to make them run faster and smoother.

Have knowledge of automated testing. We want to ensure that what we provide to our users is safe and reliable: to do so you’ll have to write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests for the features you develop, or the bugs you fix, so that they won’t break unexpectedly in the future

Have knowledge of common design patterns. By following engineering best practices wherever appropriate, you will help maintain our code clean and maintainable over time, helping us providing reliable software to our partners.

Clear and effective communication, able to articulate your ideas to diverse audiences including team members and stakeholders

We value a strong ability to drive projects to completion and deliver results effectively at a sustainable pace.

🤩 Sounds great, what happens next?

Once you have hit apply, someone from our Talent team will reach out to you with an update, after they have reviewed your application (usually within 2 - 4 days of application if not sooner). Our process here will include 4 stages, and we can usually complete the whole process within 2 - 3 weeks.

Phone Screen (45 minutes). Technical Round (90 minutes) and Meet the team (60 minutes). Meet our Leadership (60 Minutes).

If we do end up being fortunate enough to meet you, we will always offer a feedback call as we appreciate your time in engaging with us and our process, but also because we recognise the need for feedback to facilitate growth.

Competitive salary of £72 - £80k: Our salary formula adjusts to your cost of living and experience. We also grant generous stock options to any permanent employee at the end of the probation period. We adjust salaries based on the cost of living index for employees based outside of the UK.

🏝 Location

This role will need to be based in one of the following countries; UK, Spain, Ireland, Germany or France. We organise regular in-person events and online socials to make sure you can meet up with peers. If you want to come to the offices in London or Berlin, you’re most welcome of course! Birdie cannot currently support any visa applications, we do require permanent right to work in the role’s location
