As the voice of the UK’s smart building management & automation systems industry, the BCIA’s mission is to ensure building controls are seen as the go-to solution to meet sustainability and energy efficiency targets in the built environment. Following a period of unprecedented growth, the BCIA is now seeking to appoint a talented Technical Consultant for this newly created role.

The Technical Consultant will take ownership of the Association’s range of published technical content and training courses, ensuring they are authored to an exceptional standard and considered best practice in the market. Possessing extensive industry experience and having a great understanding of the new and emerging technologies that will drive innovation in the BEMS/BACS sector, it is expected that the Technical Consultant will bring a natural ability for writing engaging and accurate technical content, whilst also having a broad understanding of our audiences to ensure the level of content is adapted and relatable to the user. Experience of writing training modules and/or technical articles and publications would therefore be advantageous.

This interesting role will see the individual take responsibility for developing a portfolio of existing and new publications and training courses, in order to further the reputation that BCIA already holds for quality and excellence. We are looking for someone proactive and self-motivated, with an established network within the BEMS industry and experience of working with stakeholders.

Reporting to the Executive Officer, the successful candidate will welcome the opportunity to work autonomously and will be comfortable meeting deadlines, at times leveraging the support of volunteers to bring projects to successful completion.

Main responsibilities

Plan, author and maintain an up-to-date portfolio of existing and new technical publications on behalf of the Association
Provide insights and technical support to the Technical Working Group
Working with the Chair of the Technical Working Group help to shape the forward work plan for the group, based on industry insights, trends and knowledge to help the group provide thought-leadership and best practice to the BCIA membership
Provide technical content for the BEMS Controls Engineer Apprenticeship training modules.
Provide technical content for the BCM technical training courses to ensure they remain current and in line with new and emerging technologies.
Manage the delivery of technical projects, both as part of the Technical Working Group and wider Association activity, ensuring they are delivered on time and within the budget parameters set.
Develop businesses cases for investment as required, for Management Committee approval.
Proactively support the identification of gaps in technical content and/or training that will support BCIA’s reputation and market position.
Work positively and openly with BCIA contractors as needed including commissioned consultants and those on retained contracts including the Strategic Communications Agency, Annual Awards Event Management Agency, Market Reports Agency, Public Affairs Agency and the FETA Secretariat.
To procure sub-contractors (when required) and ensure their obligations are satisfactorily delivered.
Keep abreast of emerging technologies and methods, ascertain the real benefits and present to the technical group to shape future work plans.

Educated to graduate level in a technical discipline (e.g. electrical or mechanical engineering, sustainability engineering) or hold BEMS/BACS related qualifications
Broad leadership and stakeholder management experience in a BEMS/BACS role
In depth working understanding of BEMS/BACS including current and emerging technologies
Experience of writing training materials and/or technical articles and publications
Ability to craft engaging technical content, with the ability to adapt content as needed for various technical and non-technical audiences
Be self-motivated, have integrity, and be able to encourage others (many of whom are volunteers) to meet their commitments.
Good time management skills to deliver projects on time and to budget
Excellent written and computer literacy skills
Good aural and oral communication skill
Good presentation skills and a personable manner
A flexible approach to work and the achievement of the Associations’ aims and objectives

BCIA will consider different options to fill this role including employed, self-employed or through a contract arrangement. The workload is estimated to be in the region of 52 days per annum. This doesn’t necessarily need to be one day per week and will be determined by the demands of projects. This role can be remote, hybrid or office based. The office base is located at the FETA offices, Hare Hatch RG10 9TH.
